The Buddies Trip Playbook: Planning a Golf Trip That Actually Works
A practical guide to pacing, packing, group size, and booking a golf trip your buddies will still be talking about a year later.
Every buddies trip has a moment on day three where somebody says, "we should do this every year." And every buddies trip has a moment on day three where somebody else has vanished into their hotel room with a heating pad and a bad attitude. The difference between those two trips isn't the course. It's the planning.
I've been on the good version and the bad version. The bad one had a 6:12 a.m. tee time after a late arrival, a foursome that didn't really know each other, and a resort a rental-car drive from the golf. The good ones share a set of quiet decisions made months earlier. This is the playbook.
Start with the group, not the course
The single biggest predictor of whether a trip works is the group. Eight guys who all want the same trip beats twelve who sort of agreed to something.
Before you look at a single course, get honest answers to three questions:
- How much golf per day? 18 and done, or 36 and dinner? These are different trips with different people.
- What's the budget ceiling? Not the aspirational number. The real one.
- Are we here to compete or to hang out? Both are legitimate. They're not the same trip.
Four to eight is the sweet spot. Under four and you lose the tournament energy; over eight and logistics start eating the trip — tee-time windows stretch, dinner reservations get harder, and someone always feels like an afterthought.
Book earlier than you think
For the marquee places — Bandon, Pinehurst, Cabot, Sand Valley, Streamsong, Pebble — a year out is normal. Peak-season weekends at those resorts get claimed by groups who've been going annually for a decade. You are competing with tradition.
If you're inside six months and you had your heart set on a specific bucket-list resort in peak season, adjust. Either shift to shoulder season (often the better trip anyway — fewer people, softer light, sometimes better rates) or pivot to a resort with more capacity. Shoulder season at a top-tier resort will almost always beat peak season at a second choice.
One planning tip that pays off: put a single person in charge of the calendar. Democracy is where trips go to die. Someone needs the authority to say "we're going these four days" and move on.
Pace the days
The number one rookie mistake is booking too much golf. 36 on day one sounds heroic when you're texting about it in February. By dinner on day two, you'll wish you had a walking round and an afternoon off.
A pace that tends to hold up for most groups:
- Day 1: Arrive. 18 in the afternoon if the travel cooperates, otherwise just range and dinner. Don't play your best course tired.
- Day 2: The showcase round in the morning. A second 18 or a short course in the afternoon for those who want it.
- Day 3: 36 if the group's got it. This is your big day.
- Day 4: One last round before flights. Keep it earlier rather than later so nobody's sprinting to the airport.
The people who play 36 every day of a five-day trip are the people who post one great round and three sore, cranky ones. Rest is a strategy.
Pick the right resort, not the most famous one
The instinct is to book the course you've seen on TV. Sometimes that's the right call. Often it isn't.
Ask instead: does this resort make the whole trip easy? A great buddies-trip resort has lodging within walking distance of the golf, food and drink on property so you're not driving after a long day, and multiple courses so you're not repeating loops. That's why the destination-resort model — Bandon, Sand Valley, Cabot, Streamsong, Pinehurst village — works so well for groups. The friction is engineered out.
If the trip requires a rental car shuttle between hotel and course every morning, that's a tax on the group's energy. It's fine for a two-day trip. It's a grind for four.
Pack for weather you don't expect
The most common packing mistake is dressing for the forecast instead of the region. Coastal trips get windy and cold even in July. Desert trips get chilly at dawn. Sandhills trips get all four seasons in a day.
A short packing list that has never let me down:
- Rain gear that actually works — jacket and pants, not a windbreaker
- A warm layer even if the forecast says 80s
- Two gloves minimum; wet weather eats gloves
- Comfortable shoes for walking, and a second pair in case the first pair gets soaked
- Advil, sunscreen, chapstick, blister bandages. Trip savers.
Softgoods dry slowly on the road. Overpack shirts, underpack pants.
The little things that make a trip
A few habits from groups that have been doing this for years:
- A trip format. Ryder Cup style, individual stroke play with a handicap, a rotating skins game — pick something that keeps everyone in it through Sunday.
- A trip captain who isn't also the accountant. Split the roles. Whoever handles tee times shouldn't also be collecting Venmos.
- A group text that starts weeks before. Weather updates, tee-time reminders, trash talk. It's part of the trip.
- One non-golf hour a day. A walk on the beach, a nap, a cigar on the porch. The trip gets better when there's a beat of silence in it.
The morning-of
Set the alarm earlier than you need to. Coffee first, then range, then tee. The groups that show up ten minutes before their time and skip the range are the groups that shoot 92 on the front and can't figure out why.
Then keep the phone in the bag. You'll get the photos you need. The rest of it — the shot on 14, the putt somebody drained on 17, the round somebody had that they'll dine out on for a year — happens whether or not you documented it.
